Passengers travelling at night have probably noticed the different kinds of lights on and around the airfield. Some of these lights flash in white or yellow, some are steady red and even blue. Airport lighting is essential for aircraft operation at night. It increases visibility, helps determine the pilot’s location on the airfield and even the amount of runway in front of him. In general, airport lighting is divided into airport lighting, taxiway lighting, runway lighting and approach light systems. This video was produced by VFR Productions, a multimedia production company within the Flight Department of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach Campus.
